Year over year, the value of exported raw aluminum slowed to a 1.1% gain compared to $71.4 billion for 2023.
By value, the 6 biggest exporters (Canada, Russia, United Arab Emirates, India, Malaysia and Australia) generated almost half (48.4%) of aluminum shipments in 2024.
Spelled aluminium by British writers, aluminum is the world’s most widely used non-iron and non-steel metal and is the basic ingredient for a wide range of recyclable products. The latter includes beverage cans, construction materials and transport vehicles. Silvery-white in color, pure aluminum is non-magnetic and is also notable for its low density, relatively light weight and resistance to corrosion.
Among continents, Asian countries sold the highest dollar worth of exported aluminum during 2024 with shipments valued at $27.6 billion or 38.2% of the global total. In second place were Europe-based exporters at 35.1% while another 13.9% of worldwide aluminum shipments originated from North America.
Smaller percentages came from providers in Oceania (6.3%) led by Australia and New Zealand, Africa (5.1%), then Latin America (1.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for raw aluminum is 7601.

Countries Earning Greatest Surpluses from Global Aluminum Trade
The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for aluminum during 2024. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported aluminum and its import purchases for that same commodity.
- Canada: US$7.9 billion (net export surplus up 2.8% since 2023)
- Russia: $6.9 billion (down -9.7%)
- United Arab Emirates: $6.4 billion (up 3.6%)
- India: $3.8 billion (down -1.6%)
- Australia: $3.7 billion (up 8.6%)
- Norway: $3.2 billion (down -2.5%)
- Bahrain: $2.8 billion (down -13.8%)
- Iceland: $2 billion (down -2.4%)
- Malaysia: $1.96 billion (up 14.1%)
- South Africa: $1.5 billion (down -2.3%)
- Qatar: $1.4 billion (down -17.2%)

- Oman: $703.9 million (up 17.8%)
- New Zealand: $703.2 million (down -7.2%)
- Iran: $612.4 million (up 23.8%)
Canada, Russia and the UAE generated the highest surpluses in the international trade of aluminum. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms the strong competitive advantages for those countries in the international trade for this specific product category.
Countries Incurring Worst Deficits from Global Aluminum Trade
The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for aluminum during 2024. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the deficit between the value of each country’s imported aluminum purchases and its exports for that same commodity.
- United States: -US$10.2 billion (net export deficit down -24.7% since 2023)
- Germany: -$5.1 billion (down -26.1%)
- Japan: -$5.03 billion (down -27.9%)
- mainland China: -$5.01 billion (up 43.5%)
- Türkiye: -$3.7 billion (down -17.4%)
- South Korea: -$3.1 billion (down -12.9%)
- Mexico: -$2.7 billion (down -22.9%)
- Italy: -$1.8 billion (down -41.3%)
- Netherlands: -$1.3 billion (up 77.8%)
- Thailand: -$1.1 billion (down -31.9%)
- Spain: -$1 billion (down -30.3%)
- Taiwan: -$983.6 million (down -38.1%)
- France: -$925.1 million (down -11.8%)
- Austria: -$830.9 million (down -24.2%)
- Greece: -$668.2 million (down -27.5%)
The United States of America incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of aluminum during 2024, with American imports of the silvery metal far outpacing its exports.
These negative cashflows highlight America’s competitive disadvantage for this specific product category and conversely signals opportunities for aluminum-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
